Muslim minorities and the refugee crisis in Europe workshop
30th August – 3rd September 2018, Warsaw (Poland)
The Middle East and Central Asia Unit of the Department of Political Studies at the Collegium of Socio-Economics of SGH Warsaw School of Economics is organising an intensive interdisciplinary workshop for young researchers, NGO and youth workers, as well as for professionals on the refugee crisis and attitudes towards Muslims in the EU, with a special focus on wider Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge, practical tools and skills which will enable the participants to understand the character of the refugee crisis and attitudes towards the Muslims.
The workshop is a part of the Jean Monnet Project ref: EU | Muslim minorities and the refugee crisis in Europe co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
CONTENT
The workshop will cover the following issues:
1. Islam and Muslims in Europe (with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe),
2. 2014+ refugee crisis in Europe: causes, consequences, coping strategies and policy responses,
3. Islamophobia and fear of ethnic or religious Others: reasons for, manifestations, and ways to counteract it,
4. Public speaking, the art of discussion and rhetoric to enable effective public usage of the knowledge and skills gained in 1–3.
The workshop will be conducted by experts in Islamic studies (1), migration, politics and international relations (2), Islam in Europe, sociology and psychology (3), media and rhetoric (4). The list of trainers is available on the project’s website.
VENUE AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The workshop will be held at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics (al. Niepodległości 162, 02-554 Warsaw, Poland) from 30th August to 3rd September 2018 (i.e. 5 working days). Applicants should be able to participate in the whole event.
Accommodation, coffee breaks, local transportation and workshop materials will be covered by the organisers. Travel to and from Warsaw will be reimbursed up to 200 EUR.
Following the workshop each participant will be asked to organize at least one event (a workshop, an open lecture, a discussion, a debate) in his/her country on refugees, migrants or Muslims. These events should be organised till the end of 2018.
